We had a fantastically productive day at Newton planting over a hundred 6ft tree on the right bank of our fishing. This is being done to Help stabilise river banks, provide cover in the form of tree roots, shade to help control river temperature, and reduce diffuse pollution to boost invertebrates & improve trout egg hatch rates! – So fairly important work for us!
Although we would like to fence of the river bank to help protect the trees, keep sheep and cattle out of the water, and further provide bankside cover, the farmer is currently not keen on the idea, hopefully the benefits of the scheme will bring him round.
The stabilised banks will also keep the river channel at the right width providing good depth and creating pools that will help hold fish. Admittedly this is not an over night project, it will be more like a 10 – 20 year project, but it is this forward vision that will restore/enhance our rivers and keep our club water in order for the future.
